What is the GROW BIOINTENSIVE (GB) Method?
by Matt Drewno, VGFP Mini-Farm/Seedbank Manager

The following is an excerpt from Matt's Booklet 38: A Path to Peace and Sustainability: Growing Soil, Food and Seed in As Little As 1,000 Sq. Ft. published in 2021.

The GB method is comprised of 8 basic principles developed from cultures around the world and throughout history. These principles are brought together to create a wholistic solution to our agricultural, resource, ecological and population challenge. The method can be applied in any climate and soil where food can be grown and is adaptable to a wide variety of crops and conditions. In the following section, we will only briefly introduce the GB Method. At the end of this booklet we have provided a resource list for those wishing to better understand and apply this technique in the garden or mini-farm.

The GB Method is replicable, scalable and focuses on increasing yields while managing sustainable soil fertility. Because we start from a balanced soil, crops grown with this technique are often healthier and more nutritious and less subject to pest and disease. GB increases yields while also decreasing our ecological footprint allowing more of Nature to be conserved and restored. In addition, this whole systems approach to agriculture disconnects us from a wasteful, polluting and exploitative global food system. Compared with conventional agriculture, the GB Method can:

  • Increase yields 2-4x that of conventional agriculture
  • Reduce water usage by 67-88% compared to conventional agriculture
  • Use 96% less energy and 50-100% less purchased fertilizer
  • Grow soil 60 times faster than normally occurs
  • Reduce the agricultural footprint by 50% or more, restoring and conserving ecosystems.
