Empowering the Hands That Feed the Nation: G-BIACK and Women Farmers
by Samuel Nderitu, Co-Director, G-BIACK

Samuel Nderitu and his wife Peris Wanjiru are Co- Directors of GROW BIOINTENSIVE Agriculture Centre of Kenya (G-BIACK, gbiack.netlify.app and g-biack.org) in Thika, near Nairobi. Since 2008, they have trained over 25,000 people. We estimate over 3.5 million people practice GB in Africa because of this and other programs. We are grateful and inspired by their work!

At G-BIACK we are proud to work with a dynamic and resilient group of women who form the backbone of food production in Kenya. Over 75% of our farmer clientele are women—mothers, grandmothers, and young women—who juggle household responsibilities while growing the food that sustains their families and communities. These women are not only our primary audience but also our greatest source of inspiration, as they lead the charge in sustainable farming across the country.

For the past 16 years, G-BIACK has championed the GROW BIOINTENSIVE agriculture model, and our work has now spread far and wide throughout Kenya and beyond. This milestone has been made possible thanks to the dedication of thousands of smallholder farmers, most of them women, who have embraced this regenerative, resource efficient approach to farming. We’re also investing in the next generation through programs that support young women, ensuring a smooth and meaningful transition of knowledge and responsibility from the older to the younger generation.

From our eldest woman farmer at 101 years old to our youngest at just 18, these women represent a legacy of strength, resilience, and hope. The 18-year-old, farming a small plot of land inherited from her parents symbolizes the future of Kenyan agriculture. This vital work is made possible through the generous support of our partners, who stand with us in uplifting women farmers and transforming food systems across Kenya. Together, we are sowing seeds of change, one woman at a time.
