Growing a Living Fence
David Troxell, 2022, 8 pp.

Years ago, we received a copy of the book Hedgerow as a gift from a friend. The lovely writing and beautiful illustrations struck a chord deep within us and inspired us to think about creating hedgerows in our own gardens. With the book as an inspiration, EA Communications Director David Troxell used his extensive experience in landscape and garden design to plan our hedge, which we hope to establish at The Jeavons Center over the course of several years; Booklet 43 is an outline of that plan.

John Beeby, Booklet 29, 2nd ed. 2013, 168 pp.

For thousands of years, farmers were able to predict the agricultural value of land by observing the plants that grow on it. This book shows you how to optimize your garden's health and productivity, simply by observing the plants growing in your garden. Learn what natural fertilizers lead to best garden health. Fully revised and updated edition. Includes color photos.

PRAYER FOR THE TREES
We thank Thee God! for thy Trees,
Thou contest very near to us through thy Trees.
From them we have beauty, wisdom, love,
The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and the strength.
Help us, Oh God!
to give our best to life
and leave the world

and worthy of having lived in it.
Prosper thou our planting
and establish thy kingdom of love and understanding
on the Earth.

Practial Handbook of Market Gardening

Courtois-Gérard, Grain Merchant and Vegetable Grower, 6th Edition,
J. Hetzel & Co., Publishers. First Edition Published in 1844; This Edition Probably Published around 1870.
Translated from French by Carol Cox and published by Ecology Action in 2019.
196 pp.

Original title: Manuel Pratique de Culture Maraïchère, 6th ed. Printed on recycled paper, with 30% post-consumer waste.

INTRODUCTION
FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ECOLOGY ACTION

In the 1970s, I learned of one of the best descriptions of the French Intensive food-growing techniques that evolved from the 1600s. It took 15 years to locate a copy of the book containing them, Manuel Pratique de Culture Maraîchère by Courtois-Gérard (Practical Handbook of Market Gardening). At that time, Carol Cox, Ecology Action's Garden Manager, reviewed the publication and found that there was indeed great detail, including six ways to cultivate lettuce. She began translating, yet managing a large GROW BIOINTENSIVE research garden forced several postponements of this project.

Now, in 2015, 44 years later, the work is visible for everyone to see and learn from!

The sensitivity and understanding of the French Intensive gardeners are exceptional, and the quality of the food produced was, too. This knowledge and skill resulted in a choreography that enabled them to produce up to nine crops a year, rather than the normal one or two. One way in which this was accomplished was the simultaneous sowing of radish and carrot seeds into a prepared growing bed. The radishes were ready for harvest in 3 to 4 weeks and, during their growing time, "nursed" the carrot seeds, which like a moist soil, to a more thorough germination. The carrots, a crop that matures in 9+ weeks, began growing at the end of the second week of the radish growth. Four weeks after the radish harvest—6 weeks into the carrot growth—small amounts of carrots were removed on 15-inch offset centers, and cauliflower seedlings were transplanted at these points. Four weeks later, the carrots were harvested—4 weeks into the cauliflower growth. Four to 8 weeks afterwards, depending on the variety, the cauliflower was harvested. In this way, three crops were grown in as little as a 16-week period!

Excitingly, the French gardeners were economically successful, as well. They broke even on most crops and made the profit through the specialized growing of smooth-skinned canteloupe. They needed a variety without netting, so the melons would not rot in the moist mini-climate, or living mulch, the closely spaced offset plants provided. Today, two varieties that would work for this are the Charentais orange-fleshed and the Haogen green-fleshed varieties. Grown under the "hoop houses" of the time, Dutch Lights, each plant would be pruned to produce just two prime melons. These would mature 4 to 6 weeks earlier than those grown by others, and sold for a premium price at markets. The railways even made special rates so the French gardeners could transport their produce to urban areas easily.

The young and senior members of the French gardening extended family guilds cleaned and packed the produce in boxes for market, and the other community members did the growing and harvesting. The income enabled each guild to have "cradle to grave" economic security.

Each guild had its own special cultivation procedures, which were kept secret, so they might harvest better crops earlier.
In a way, Ecology Action is a gardening guild of localized guilds everywhere in the United States and around the world. Our "secrets", and those of our members, are shared, so, in working together, we can all benefit.

In 1972, Ecology Action began learning Alan Chadwick's biologically intensive Biodynamic/French Intensive method, a combination of these two methods created by this master horticulturist. Eventually, because this method was somewhat simplified by us, we renamed our approach Biointensive. As this form of gardening and farming became popular, we needed to distinguish its uniqueness from other versions, so we chose GROW BIOINTENSIVE® (GB) to show this. It has been our goal to make GB as sustainable as possible on a "closed-system" basis, in contrast with most approaches to food growing, which often import large amounts of organic matter and minerals.

We hope you will enjoy the techniques and approaches from an earlier century described in this book. The level of sensitivity is still relevant today. Many of the techniques are, too. At the same time, some are not the best for maintaining sustainable soil fertility. These are described as editorial amplifications. Let us know how they work for you!

The Sustainable Vegetable Garden

The Backyard Guide To Higher Yields and Healthy Soil
John Jeavons & Carol Cox, revised 1999, 118 pp.

This is a simpler, more basic version of How to Grow More Vegetables..., based on a simple garden plan. Formerly titled Lazy Bed Gardening, this book has been revised to include the latest information on GROW BIOINTENSIVE techniques. Includes a new chapter on seed saving. Especially suitable for teachers planning a school garden, or for anyone who prefers a shorter simpler introduction to GROW BIOINTENSIVE.

"A lazy bed is a deeply prepared bed (2’ deep) whose growing area can produce up to four times more than an equivalent area prepared less deeply and planted in rows. So the gardener has only one bed to dig, one bed to fertilize, one bed to water, one bed to weed - only one-quarter the area it would take to produce the same amount of yield by other methods.”

This book combines our experiences from How to Grow More Vegetables... and Booklets #14 and #26 into a new understanding of how to grow all your own food in the backyard, while also caring for the health of your soil and the planet. The emphasis is on food gardening and improving the soil through crop selection. New gardeners can now benefit from direct garden research in over 130 countries - this method has been tried everywhere, on every type of soil, in all climates, and it works for epicurean gardeners as well as third world farmers. It gives specific recommendations on the best crops for beginning gardeners, and how much to grow for a family’s needs.

TYSWP Book CoverTest Your Soil With Plants: Second Edition
(formerly Booklet 29 - now revised and expanded!)

"Notice the number of different kinds of plants growing in that soil, perhaps some so small and inconspicuous you have to get down on your hands and knees to see, perhaps others that tower above you. Realize that each one of those plants, and every plant, speaks of the conditions in which it grows. The language it speaks can only be seen, not heard. Through its presence, form, color and vigor, each plant describes - in general or very specific terms - the moisture, acidity, nutrient content, and other conditions of the soil. The simple fact that a particular plant is growing there is telling you something about that soil. The fact that the plant is stunted and its growing tips are withered is telling you something. The fact that its color is a deep green, but it seems not to be vigorous, is telling you somethings. Now, take a look at that little patch of ground and plants again, and imagine the hundred, maybe thousands, of pieces if information that are being communicated to you! " - From the Introduction

Booklet 37

Energy Use in Biointensive Food Production
Steve Moore, 2013, 29 pp

Among the benefits potential for the Biointensive Sustainable Mini-Farming method are higher yields, lower water consumption, less fertilizer. It is fairly straightforward to weigh produce, measure water use, and keep track of fertilizers. It is not so easy to evaluate the total input of energy in farming systems.

Steve Moore, director of the Agroecology Program at Elon University in North Carolina, has been investigating this particular aspect of the Biointensive system. His new booklet in the EA Self-Teaching Mini-Series, Energy Use in Biointensive Food Production, evaluates the different forms of energy that contribute to food production. They include the calories of labor, the calories embedded in the tools we use, and the calories used in getting the food to our plates—processing and preserving. Two crops, onions and flour corn, serve to illustrate how the use of energy is calculated with as little as 6% the energy being used in biologically intensive practices compared with conventional ones.

Be sure to check out the energy efficiencies of fermentation food preservation, including Sauerkraut!
